Hi guys,

When I was looking through the flashdrive distributed at GCER, I noticed that some of the papers' filenames are corrupted. Ironically, my paper is one of them. They cannot be removed, moved, renamed, or otherwise repaired. I'm going to format the drive to get rid of everything, but I wanted to keep an archive of all the files on it. I have a picture to upload of what I'm talking about:

Could someone perhaps email me these 4 papers so that I may look at them? Thanks!

EDIT:
my email is adamfara AT seas DOT upenn DOT edu

Hi Adam,

The same thing happened with at least one of Norman's GCER flash drives. I'm not sure if KIPR bought a bad batch of flash drives or if they made an error while copying the files.

Since this appears to be an issue for multiple teams, I'm hesitant to just e-mail the files to everyone who asks... I know you're authorized to have the files, but some other people who ask might not be able to prove they're authorized, and KIPR may not like it if we distribute files to the general public (they previously requested that we delete a post that contained all of last year's papers). I'm thinking a better way to deal with it is to ask KIPR to authorize us to simply post the flash drive contents on the Community site.

I'll ask KIPR about that ASAP... if you really need them now, feel free to contact me at jeremy DOT rand AT ou DOT edu and I'll e-mail them to you (this offer is restricted to Adam).

I would definitely sayits a bad batch of drives. My teammate plugged his into his laptop back at our room, windows didn't notice it and it got burning hot (like we had to let it sit a while before we could touch it). Luckily it has the metal part which kind of acted like a heatsink. Mine occasionally doesn't work and needs to be wriggled in the usb port a little.

Figures. I've e-mailed KIPR asking for permission to post all the files on the Community site; hopefully they'll get back to me soon.

It seems like KIPR distributed both 2GB and 8GB versions of the flashdrives. I think all of the 2GB versions are bad. Look on the usb connector of the drive to see if it says "2GB". The 8GB ones don't say anything on them.

As it may be of interest, I was unable to get any of the 2GB flashdrives to mount (if I recall correctly, I couldn't even get it to show up on /dev/) on any of the 3 Debian Linux machines my team brought with us (two running the stable "squeeze" version, one running the testing "sid" variant).

I originally received one of the 2GB versions, found it wouldn't mount, and got it swapped out as fast as I could :).

Interesting... the flash drive which Norman had that was bad mounted fine under Windows 7, but when we tried to copy 4 specific files, we got a filesystem error, and the resulting files only had about the first half-page of text present.

Steve says he'll get back to me soon about my inquiry on posting the flash drive contents. In the meantime, I guess we just wait.

Mine is 8 gigs. I am sometimes able to copy files to it and read them off of it fine, but other times windows thinks it's copied files to it okay but then they either don't exist or are unreadable.

That's weird because my usb is 8gigs, and I have windows 7. When I copied all the files on my computer, I never got a filesystem error, and the files were perfectly fine.I think its more of the fact that they probably didn't copy it right.

Sorry about all of the issues with the flash drives. We have just posted all of the GCER papers from this year and last year on the botball store as free downloads, you will have to make an account.
