I was wondering what other competitions or events teams have used the XBC or CBC with.

I am a freshman at Grand Valley State University and we used the XBC controller to compete in the national Trinity college robotics competition Robo Waiter.

http://www.trincoll.edu/events/robot/RoboWaiter/default.asp

We took first place against 8 other robots from around the U.S.
We used the XBC camera to detect LED's and random chairs and dolls that were placed in the kitchen.

Here is our robot at work:

Do you videos or pictures or your projects in work?

Zac Jennings and Adam Troutt (Norman North) teamed up with Austin Jones and me (Norman High) for an Intel Science Fair project using the XBC. The title of the project was "Simulating a remote-controlled, semi-autonomous security system with inexpensive robotics equipment." Basically, it was a bot that shot rubber bands at "hostile" targets while ignoring "friendly" targets, and asked a remote security operator for confirmation before shooting. The project was scrapped before completion, because none of us had sufficient time to commit to the project. We're considering developing it for the 2010 GCER Showcase, but it looks unlikely at this point.

Jeremy, do you have an pictures or drawings of what you did complete, or a link to the competition. It sounds very interesting.

Hey Jake,

I probably have an MLCAD render of a prototype rubber band gun lying around... and I have some physical bots at my house... but I'm not sure where the rest of the stuff would be.

The competition is at http://www.societyforscience.org/ISEF/ if you're interested... John Romanishin and Tiemo Landes from Norman High entered a bot in the competition a couple years ago, which studied stereoscopic vision using projectile launchers and 2 XBCCams. I'm told that they heavily impressed the judges with that one.

We (Lee High School) competed at the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society maze competition at the University of North Florida. The robots must fit into a 6 x 6 x 6 inch cube, so an XBC BARELY fit with an SP or Micro. We entered two robots, and won first and second.

We are also planning on entering the Trinity College Fire Fighting and Robo Waiter competitons. It'll give us something to do in the fall before Botball:] The vision system on the XBC is pretty powerful, especially if you have old ones lying aroung from Botball.

Mr. C,

That would be awesome if you compete at Trinity, the XBC ran amazing for the Robo-Waiter Competition. It would be awesome to see another team use one competing against us.

How did you get the XBC camera to home in on the center LED at the shelf? That seems to be the hardest part.

Good job on the RoboWaiter last year. Liked the YouTube. That doll had it comin', didn't she?

For the first part of the program we had hard code written moves to get to a specific position about 18" from the table and in the center of it. We had a series of if statements encase the robot detected the randomly placed chair and doll in between the robot and table. Once it got to that position it went into a led blogging code which centered its self on the red blob. Then we used a series of sensors to detect the table distance and height. Once those were at the right measurements, we captured the plate and then moved to the table using the same style of coding.

Then a algorithm was used to find the shortest distance back to base, based on the moves and turns that were done to get to the delivery table.
