We're a new team. We are trying to see the Transport Box using the camera, and we are wondering if we can color the box in some non-permanent way?

Thank you.

Welcome to Botball! I hope your season is going well so far.

Do you mean a removable paint or marker or something? I don't think that is allowed.
The only thing I can think of would be to attach an independent structure to your transportation area that would be one solid color. Because the transportation center starts in your start box, you are allowed to do that. For example, if you put a ring of blue lego around part of it, you could have your camera look for that blue color. (But if you are in the Oklahoma region you probably shouldn't use blue as a color. The room our tournament was in last year was blue floor to ceiling and that messed up a few very good teams. Hopefully it won't be blue this year, but I don't know how much control KIPR has over that)

Good luck with your bots!

I don't think you are allowed to have large chunks of structures be the same color as game pieces. There was a FAQ about that a while back. The camera can see QR codes. You could put a random QR code on some paper and attach that to the box and have the camera recognize that. You can make a QR code for your team's name, your website, or anything else except for the ones used in the game board (those are specifically banned)

Thank you both. Is colored paper allowed?

No, but as long as the camera can see the QR code, it should work.

Are we sure about that color block thing? I remember there being an FAQ on that a year or few ago, but A, that FAQ no longer holds sway over this year's rules, and B, I feel like that was in the context of confusing the other team and specifically mentioned being the same color as game objects. I think a color block regulated to one team's side that wasn't large enough to be seen clearly from the other side should be just fine.

A. That may be true, but they will probably rule the same way again

B. This is correct that. That was the original purpose.

I'm not sure what color the game board floor will be at regionals and GCER this year, but relying on a specific color for a large chunk of points is risky (given previous botbuy colored curtains, blue tarp floors, etc). Especially if someone in the audience has that color on. No one will have a specific QR code and you can therefore know that if you see it, it is what you are looking for. You could go to a place like BrickLink and buy differently colored LEGOs if the ones in the kit don't work, but for the reasons stated above, I would advise against it and go with a QR code. KIPR has been knows to host tournaments in areas that mess with the camera. You want something totally distinctive. Plus, Paper can only be grayscale:

"Paper and foam board may only be black or white; only gray scale may be used for printing including official logos for sponsors of your team. Teams may print QR codes on their paper; however the codes for the letters P and T are prohibited" - The Official Rules - Page 18
