Should I join KIPR Open? I am already competing in Botball, however my coach is saying that I should also participate in KIPR Open because I have many creative ideas that will help with the KIPR Open tournament. My coach even said, and I quote, "After all, it was YOUR claw that YOU made that made us win last year (2013)." And, in fact, that is true.
So, should I join KIPR Open too? Would it be a good experience that is worth it?

Thanks
~Harrison

Several Norman Advanced students (high schoolers) also compete in KIPR Open under the Team SNARC name (along with some OU students such as myself). It's generally been a quite positive experience working with them, and they did fine (winning DE in 2013). So yeah, if you have the free time, I would definitely recommend it.

May I ask what Botball team you're currently on?

My senior year of High School I did both, we got so excited about the Open (called Beyond Botball back then) that we basically forgot about the High School competition. We had about 6 people on the team and we all "competed" in both so if you have a small team with only a few dedicated people that could certainly happen. We ended up winning the Open that year and decided to try and help out the other teams in the High School competition since the tournament was local to us and came back with the Spirit Award which was the first National/Global trophy our team/school brought back so our school's Deans liked that and it helped keep the program alive at my now High School Alma mater.

There was one kid at this last year's that competed in the Open,Aerial, and HS Botball. It sounds like you have done Botball before so you know the stress and joy that comes from it, I'm not going to lie and say it is not added stress but I can guarantee it is double the joy no matter what happens. The random assortment of people that have the time and will to compete in the KIPR Open come together as family as much as rivals; just like the HS competitions almost everyone becomes friends and are more than willing to help you out with pieces and give tons of advice whether you asked for it or not. It is a great experience that I hope you choice to do either now or in years to come.

Thank you both of you for your input. Jeremy: I am on one of the four Palm Desert Charter Middle School Teams. I have been in Botball for one year (so yes I do know the stress that comes from it). Again, thank you both.

If anyone else is still reading this, then please still reply to this thread: I would like some more input in this decision. Thanks!

The more things you join, the smarter and broader your experience is. But, conversely, the more you join, the more busy you are and stressed you might be in the future. But, in terms of robotics. It is generally a good idea to join the "adult" competition.
