PD's List: A 7th DefensemanAnother job of Pierre Dorion's this summer is to find a 6-7 defenseman to play in case of injury or rest. Now I do not necessarily agree with the organization's decision to have Mark Borowiecki as a for sure top 6 defenseman but I have accepted that it's what they want https://www.ottawafansstore.com/Anton_Forsberg_Face_Mask-95. Looking at the depth chart of the organization it has been more than explained that they will likely head into next season with the top four of Karlsson-Methot / Phaneuf-Ceci Olle Alsing Hoodie. The question is who will rotate in and out of the bottom pair with Borowiecki and Wideman. Wideman is a right handed shot and Boro is a left handed shot so I feel as if the signing will really show who they believe will be switching in and out of the lineup on a nightly basis Brady Tkachuk Face Mask.Option #1: Patrick WierciochThe forever not top 4 defenseman is back at it again winning blogger's hearts. I don't necessarily believe that the Sens should be tendering his 2.7M contract but I do believe there is a spot for him on this team at a decent price. The reason I don't believe that they should tender him is because I feel as if they have a lot of negotiating power here. Wiercioch had a +1.3% Corsi Relative to his team last season which is very encouraging because he was really pulled down by a growing Cody Ceci. He had a 45.1 CF% when on the ice with Ceci and when apart from Ceci he had a 51.5 CF%. I would really want Wiercioch at around 1.5M each for two years. He is most definitely not a fan favourite but he more than gets the job done. Option #2: David SchlemkoHonestly this is the player that I feel is the perfect option for the Sens. The 29 year old earned only $625k last season and was very helpful to the Devils. He played in 67 games and had 6 goals and 13 assists with a an average of 18:39. That was a major step up from his precious year in Calgary where he was averaging only 12:39. Schlemko had a +2.5 CF relative to his team and was decent at shot suppression, as when he was on the ice the team averaged almost 3.5 less shots against per 60. Schlemko is not considered a regular in the NHL which is likely a good thing for the Senators. He probably won't demand ice time and term when negotiating. A sweet spot for the Senators would be at around 1M for 1 year. I wouldn't want to commit term because these type of players seem to always be available and a cardinal rule of team management is not giving term to depth players. Option #3: Mike WeberAnother player that isn't considered a regular in the NHL is likely available on the cheap https://www.ottawafansstore.com/Alexei_Yashin_Face_Mask-92. The guy who gave away the game earlier in the playoffs probably isn't who you would have wanted to see on this list but it thankfully for him one play doesn't define a career. Weber played 45 games this past season with the Sabres and Capitals https://www.ottawafansstore.com/Wade_Redden_Pillow_Cover-226. His main D-partner was Cody Franson who has been decent in the past. Both players weren't as good when away from each other but were a decent defense pair when on the ice at the same time. Weber is coming off of a 3-year 1.66 deal and probably wont get nearly as much money or term this summer. Weber had a +1.2 CF% relative to his teams this past season and played very low event hockey Ray Emery Flag. This is what may be considered "safe" by some NHL personnel. A contract that should offer is again around 1M for 1 year and no more because I am not completely sold on him.Are there any other cheap defenseman you've spotted out there that I'm missing? Let me know in the comments below.
